![]() It would be a great story, except that one of us-a kid named Hector-didn’t make it. We didn’t just leave Serenity we escaped from it on a speeding truck. ![]() Malik isn’t even exaggerating about the “blasted out” part. “Kindergarten is like NYC compared to where we just blasted out of.” “You guys are such suckers! It’s like you just graduated kindergarten yesterday.” “Not good enough,” Randy cackles, revealing his own hand: three sixes. With a plastic knife, I saw off a piece of my own burger and place it in the Styrofoam takeout container that’s serving as the pot. “And if I’m in a good mood, I might even consider sharing it with you. When the game’s over it can be food again.” “If we eat it now, we’ve got nothing to bet with. “It’s not food, it’s our stakes,” Randy insists. “You’re supposed to say I fold,” Randy corrects. ![]() The third player, Malik Bruder, tosses his cards on the carpet. He’s from Serenity, too, but he’s been here in the real world for a couple of months already, so he knows a lot more than I do about things like poker. Trust me, that’s far from the weirdest thing about the place. I’m from Serenity, New Mexico, where nobody plays poker because it’s gambling. ![]() ![]() Then again, I only learned the rules of poker twenty minutes ago. I’ve got a pair of kings and a pair of eights. “I see your taco and raise you half a cheeseburger.” ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Does she seek adventure in a possible life after death? ![]() Elf uses this poem to express herself maybe part of the reason she wants to die is because she is bored of this life. Larkin wonders what will happen when he dies, but doctors are running to prevent him from trying anything. He says, “Where can we live but days?/ Ah, solving that question / Brings the priest and the doctor.” This definitely seems like it is referencing attempted suicide. In this poem, the narrator ponders on what happens at the end of life. This is an interesting choice for Elf to make. As a reply, Elf recites ‘Days’ by Philip Larkin (while performing a strip tease and successfully forcing the priest out of the room). Poetry plays a huge part of the novel, and outside of Yoli’s memories and conversations with Elf, poetry is the only other insight into Elf’s mind.Įlf receives a hospital visit from her old priest, who tells her to embrace God again, because only then will she find the joy in life. We aren’t able to truly tell how much pain Elf is feeling, so like Yoli, we can’t really understand why she wants to die so badly. ![]() In a previous post, I talked about how telling the story from Yoli’s perspective conceals a lot of the story. Today, people tend to use the term to describe an action-based plot, whether or not the plot hinges upon a futuristic environment (or scientific and technological advances, etc.). It was also considered a derogatory term and often used to describe the earliest T.V. ![]() If the plot and characters could be lifted out and easily placed, for instance, in current times, then it was space opera. Initially, it indicated a plot and characters that didn’t truly depend upon a futuristic environment. Many people might use the label “space opera” for these novels, but that label isn’t even accurate any more since its meaning has drifted. ![]() That’s how I came to read the entire Vatta’s War series, end to end, with the exception of the fourth book that hasn’t been released yet. I’ve read Elizabeth Moon before and she’s an excellent writer (see The Speed of Dark, which won the 2003 Nebula Award for Best Novel), so it wasn’t much of a risk. ![]() Sometimes when the Science Fiction Book Club offers a whole series of books, I bite and buy them all, telling myself that I’m saving money. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() My poem took shape at that moment as a meditation on the brevity and mystery of human life in our tiny corner of the galaxy, a feeling that has gained even greater poignancy after two years of a deadly pandemic that has hit Amazonian Brazil especially hard. Visceral currents, ritual spectacle, the endless babble of language-it all felt suddenly absurd and insignificant as I contemplated the vast, tumultuous ebb and flow of life across history. The poetic gaze, like the anthropological gaze, leaves me forever with one foot poised to step back from any private or collective moment and view it as if from afar. ![]() Surrounded by the human ocean of that parade-“slick yearning bodies / … in a herd of elbows”-I looked up at a crescent moon in the tropical night sky and began to move away from the crowd. During the months leading up to that exuberant performance, we rehearsed one night a week at a hot, crowded plaza in an impoverished neighborhood on the outskirts of the city, an experience that helped inspire my poem “The Cosmic Serpent.” The unprecedented hiatus of this world-famous street celebration brought back decade-old memories of performing in the pounding drum section of a Carnival parade in the “Sambadrome” of Manaus in the Brazilian Amazon. Most Carnival celebrations in Brazil have been canceled again in 2022 due to the resurgence of COVID-19, though larger cities like Rio and São Paulo are holding scaled-down versions of televised samba school parades at the end of April. ![]() ![]() ![]() Both of these '90s comics produced reenergized pictures for all of these characters that felt familiar, yet they were more lifelike than they had ever been.
