Because of these differences in the multimodal composition, the Finnish version of the book, in particular, differs from the original picturebook to a great extent. The chapter aims to show that the Finnish and Spanish versions of the picturebook have been written for different purposes and with a different readership in mind – to an extent that it affects the actual layout and use of images in the translation. The Story of Ferdinand may rightly be called a picturebook classic: it has been in print continuously since its first publication and it has been translated into more than 60 languages. The story was authored by Munro Leaf and illustrated by Leaf’s close friend Robert Lawson in New York in 1936. The Story of Ferdinand is a picturebook about a peaceful Spanish bull who wants to smell flowers instead of competing in bull fights.
